ABOUT POLYSTYRENE
PACKAGING COUNCIL OF THE PHILIPPINES

The Polystyrene Packaging Council of the Philippines (PPCP) is a non-profit, non-stock corporation, whose mission is to serve as a forum for issues of importance to the polystyrene industry. Its goal is to eradicate the negative perception of the public on Polystyrene (PS) as a main contributor to the degration of the environment. It serves as the clearinghouse of information regarding polystyrene, and we conduct information dissemination campaign through lectures, seminar and workshop in school, universities, and other private commercial establishments about the proper handling of PS post consumer wastes, and at the same time, to provide a realistic look at polystyrene recycling.

There are 3 main objectives that we account to as our responsibility:

1. To inform the general public on the importance of waste segregation at source.
2. To support the local government in their drive to solve the worsening problem on waste disposal and the implementation of Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
3. To promote recycling as one of the major tool to recover and retrieve wastes into useful materials.

The Polystyrene Packaging Council of the Philippines (PPCP) was formed in June 1993. Amidst times of strong environmentalism by the Green Sector, a meeting was called at the Century Park Sheraton Hotel, and immediately thereafter, the PPCP was formed with the election of its first president, Mr. Alfonso Tiu.

After its formation, effort was made to contact similar type of organization in South East Asia, as well as the Far East. Through the reference materials provided for by the Japan Chemical Industry, we have located the Japan EPS Recycling Association (JEPSRA), and thereon established contact and exchange visits in order to foster a better relationship of coordination and information sharing on Environmental and Recycling of PS post consumer waste. Soon, Korea (KFRA) and Taiwan (TEPRSRA) also join in the discussion. And in April 1995, an asian association was formed, named ASIAN MANUFACTURERS OF EPS (AMEPS), with the 4 countries as its founding members.
